Washed
on all sides by the Atlantic Ocean, Tenerife is a crossroads between three continents.
Its wonderful, year-round climate has caused it to be dubbed the 'island of
eternal springtime', and its volcanic origins have given rise to an incredibly
beautiful natural landscape. Within an area measuring just 2,000 square kilometres,
visitors will find a diverse range of natural features and formations, including
Mount Teide, whose summit stands 3,718 metres above sea level, laurisilva forests
dating from the Tertiary Era, beautiful beaches with white or black volcanic
sand
and the greatest variety of indigenous wildlife in the whole of Europe.
Around 100 years ago, the first British 'tourists' arrived in Tenerife in search of the sun. They found what they were looking for in Puerto de la Cruz, originally a fishing village situated in the north of the island in the beautiful Orotava Valley.
This valley, which runs down to the sea from the peaks of Cañadas del Teide, is a verdant paradise covered with a green carpet of pine groves and laurisilva forests in the higher and middle areas, and vast banana plantations a little further down.
Since the arrival of the first holiday-makers so many years ago, Puerto de la Cruz has become a popular tourist destination without losing one iota of its fishing and sea-faring origins, and visitors today can still see fishing boats unloading their catches on the quay or witness a traditional fishermen's procession. However, Puerto de la Cruz has also developed a wide range of alternative leisure facilities, including beaches equipped with excellent services (Jardín Beach, Martianez Beach), swimming pool complexes that are a true tribute to nature (Martianez Pools), theme parks that are considered to be among the best in the world (Loro Parque), a lively, varied night life and much, much more.
Puerto de la Cruz is also a fine example of tranquillity and safety, and its developing tourist industry has always striven to respect the natural resources that have attracted visitors to the island for over a century.
Puerto
de la Cruz is also the best place from which to visit other places of
interest
on the island, such as the cosmopolitan city of Santa Cruz, the historical towns
of La Laguna and La Orotava, the charming seaside villages along the southern
coast and the breathtaking natural areas of Masca or Las Cañadas del
Teide.
